Jackson & Perkins Rose of the Year 2017

These huge, perfectly sculpted hybrid tea roses are not only beautiful and subtly fragrant, Grateful Heart® Hybrid Tea Rose is named in honor of the American Heart Association. So while you grow and enjoy these magnificent blooms, you are also helping to bring awareness to the world's foremost killer: cardiovascular disease.

Grateful Heart® Hybrid Tea Rose is particularly appropriate to represent the AHA's good work. The 30 petals on these fully double blooms are bright red, set atop 14- to 18-inch stems above lush dark green foliage. These flowers open from pointed ovoid buds to spread 5 inches wide. Unforgettable in the garden, Grateful Heart® Hybrid Tea Rose are simply breathtaking when massed in the vase.

And Grateful Heart® Hybrid Tea Rose is as robust and long-lived as its strong presence suggests. Fully hardy through zone 5 in the north, Grateful Heart® Hybrid Tea Rose can be grown in regions of zone 4 as well with good winter protection. Nicely branched, upright, and naturally symmetrical, Grateful Heart® Hybrid Tea Rose is an impressive presence in the sunny border at 5 feet tall and 4 feet wide.

The offspring of Rose 'Moonstone,' Grateful Heart® Hybrid Tea Rose (cultivar name 'JACmoonsee') has inherited its parent's soft, rich coloring and slightly recurved petal tips. The reverse of each petal is a lighter red to deep pink, and the clove-influenced fragrance is discernable only at close range, or in a large indoor arrangement of blooms. The beauty of Grateful Heart® Hybrid Tea Rose is pervasive, and it is a rose you will admire anew each year, finding new merits in its blooms.

All of us know someone who has been touched in some way by cardiovascular disease, and Grateful Heart® Hybrid Tea Rose enables us to honor their struggle while also contributing to the progress in the field. Grow this rose in memory of loved ones and in the passionate determination to create a brighter future for all.

NOTE: Tree and patio roses are hardy to Zone 6 regardless of the rose variety grafted to their tops.

I purchased two of these roses, both of which never produced and were dead within two months.

Bloomed Pink & Died
This shopper rated the product 1 out of 5 stars

Had many problems with this particular rose. First, with the bloom color...then, it was susceptible to pests. I used horticultural oil, moved it to a different location, ensured pristine sanitation, disinfecting pruners and removing affected leaves. Ultimately, this rose died. I've been growing roses for over 25 years, and this one was a high maintenance plant that was destined to die. In total, I have 7 other rose plants that (bushes and climbers) that are healthy and happy.

Low Quality
This shopper rated the product 1 out of 5 stars

Bought two for this type June this year and both didn't survived at all. Not a single leaf can be found and the stems turned to brown after few weeks. I watered and potted them separately thinking that I can transfer them to the ground this Fall but I was very disappointed.

Pink Blooms
This shopper rated the product 3 out of 5 stars

My Grateful Heart rose bloomed as a pink rose only. Previously, the description stated bright red blooms, the plant tag also reads "Color: red". After calling to point out the difference in description and actual bloom color, J&P is sending a different rose that is a true red color. No place to share photos here. American Heart Association should know that their signature color is not represented here.

Poor quality
This shopper rated the product 1 out of 5 stars

I never usually leave reviews, but feel the need to. I ordered 2 Grateful Heart Rose Trees at $99.99 each. Plus the high extra cost to ship them. 1 of them grew just fine and the other never did anything and eventually died. I ordered a replacement which they shipped at no charge. Unfortunately that one never bloomed and died also. I wanted them as a matching pair and it was very disappointing (especially because I do have a green thumb)! So now I have 1 mismatched tree and spent over $200 total! I could go to Lowe's or Home Depot, paid much less and they have a 1 year guarantee! I am extremely disappointed in Jackson & Perkins.

Choosing Your Roses

Bare root roses are the most common form of roses for spring and early season planting, and come in two types: grafted and own root.

Grafted Bare root Roses
Own root Bare root Roses

Grafted roses, sometimes referred to as budded bare root roses, have roots that belong to a different variety of rose than the shoots. While the shoots will grow into the variety of rose you've selected, the root variety has been specially grown and developed for hardiness, improved resistance to common diseases, and improved resistance to certain weather conditions. The roots on any grafted rose you receive are usually already two years old, so they'll establish in your garden more quickly when planted.

Own root roses are grown from rose shoot cuttings and develop their own root system. Unlike grafted roses, both their roots and shoots come from the same variety of plant.

All Jackson & Perkins bare root roses are maintained in a suspended state of growth in our state-of-the-art wet cooler, so they'll be delivered to you with no foliage or blooms. The wet cooler has a uniform storage temperature set just above freezing and uses a fog system to provide consistent humidity of 100%, ensuring the roses remain fully hydrated and don't exit dormancy before leaving our facility. While you might see some variance in size, even within the same variety of bare root rose, all our roses meet the same rigorous standards of quality.

So, not sure which type of bare root rose you should choose? Don't worry, we've got that covered. We've researched which varieties of bare root roses grow better as grafted or own root, and both types can be planted in the early spring months, so just choose the variety of rose you're most interested in and get planting.

Though you might be surprised or intimidated when you receive a box of bare root roses filled with roots and shoots, rest assured, with the proper care, these little bundles will grow into stunning roses.

Container Roses

Container Roses

container roses are typically available in 2-quart sizes or larger and come with established foliage that may or may not have blooms. While bare root roses should generally be planted in early spring, container roses allow you quite a bit more flexibility in planting time, from spring all the way through fall in many zones. Fall can be a good season to plant container roses because it allows them enough time to establish themselves before cold or freezing temperatures arrive.

How has Jackson & Perkins earned this reputation? Simple, for over 100 years we have brought our customers the world's finest selection of roses.

Jackson & Perkins became a leader in the world of roses by producing dozens of award-winning roses. Jackson & Perkins has won more All-America Rose Selection awards than any other US company. In addition to the AARS awards, Jackson & Perkins has won numerous other awards, including the coveted Golden Rose of The Hague and the Royal National Rose Society’s President’s International trophy, among others.

From seed to market a new garden rose can take 8 to 10 years to develop. Every year, thousands of seedlings are grown but only a handful are selected to move into the trial phase. During this time, potential new roses are grown and evaluated in different climatic regions of the country. Our rosarians are looking for rose bushes that have stronger disease resistance, vigorous growth habits, and clean healthy foliage. When it comes to blooms, they are looking for improved flower form, unique colors, and strong fragrance.

Today Jackson & Perkins offers over 200 varieties of roses that includes a broad selection of exclusive roses, historical favorites, and innovative genetics from hybridizers around the world. We have two seasons each year for roses. In the spring, we offer bare root rose bushes, bare root 36” trees, 24” patio trees, and container grown roses. Our fall season is all bush roses, and they are available in 2QT and 1GL containers.
