Remove protective wrap. Water upon receipt only if soil is dry – do not overwater or let plant sit in standing water. Roots should not be soggy.
Plants arrive with buds, but bloom time may take 4 to 6 weeks. Your gardenia will rebloom in a matter of weeks, depending on the temperature and amount of light it receives. For optimal blooming and to avoid premature bud drop, follow these instructions carefully.
Display your gardenia plant where it will receive at least 5 hours of bright indirect or lightly filtered sunlight a day. During its growing season, spring through fall, place plant in an eastern facing window to get early morning sun; however, excessive direct sunlight should be avoided, especially in summer. If possible, maintain daytime temperatures between 70° to 80°F and nighttime temps between 55° to 65°F.
In winter months, place your gardenia in a sunny southern facing window and do not allow temperatures to drop below 45°F. Keep air as humid as possible. When interior air is dry, place the plant either near other leafy plants or next to an open container of water. You may also set your gardenia in a water-filled tray atop pebbles so that the water never touches the bottom of the planter. In environments with low humidity and/or excessive sunlight, you may also want to mist the leaves frequently; however, daily misting is usually unnecessary, and it is best not to fully saturate the leaves.
Water until it runs through the drainage holes. Keep soil evenly moist but never soggy. The soil should never dry out completely; however, in cooler weather, water less frequently to allow the top 1/2 inch to approach dryness before rewatering.
Apply complete liquid fertilizer every 4 weeks or half strength every 2 weeks throughout the growing and flowering period, typically from mid-spring to mid-fall. If leaves begin to yellow, first make sure your gardenia is receiving adequate light and water, if so, then also apply iron chelate.

Wash leaves monthly. Remove faded blooms to encourage reblooming.
To keep your plant bushy, prune long, unbranched growth, cutting just above a leaf joint. Gardenias bloom on old wood, so any pruning (light or heavy) should be done immediately after the plant has finished blooming. Don’t prune after July or the new buds that would develop into blossoms next season will be removed.
Gardenia plants are susceptible to aphids, mealybugs, scale, spider mites, and whiteflies. So, it’s important to closely inspect your plant once a month, especially the underside of leaves, and if any pests are present, remove them by hand, or gently wash the leaves with highly diluted soapy water and follow with a freshwater rinse.
Gardenia plants can be transplanted into the garden in Zones 8 to 11. In cooler climates, plants can be replanted in a larger pot and moved outdoors in early spring after the last frost. Use potting soil, preferably with an acidic pH, mixed with a small amount of ground bark or peat moss. Root ball should remain slightly above soil level. Make sure your pot is well draining. Place pot on a covered porch with bright indirect sunlight or move it into a location with partial sun for 2 to 3 weeks and then into full sun. Bring plant indoors at first threat of frost.
