A Living, Decorated Tree for Every Person On Your List

At Jackson & Perkins we've long believed that thoughtful gifting becomes memorable when it speaks to the recipient's identity, interests, and lifestyle. You, too? Lucky for us, each live decorated tree we offer is a seasonal gesture with a future, offering immediate beauty and the promise of something that lasts. Living tabletop trees arrive ready to display, either ready with a complete complement of lights and decorations or styled to your taste, and after the season can often be planted outdoors (in suitable zones, usually Zones 2 through 7) to live on. Below are ideas to match each tree style with the ideal person on your gift list.

Care and Planting: Helping the Tree Thrive

Jackson & Perkins live trees are rooted in soil and arrive ready to display right out of the box. To keep your tree healthy through the holidays and ensure it thrives once planted outdoors, follow these guidelines:

During the Holidays (Indoors)

  • Place the tree in a cool, bright location indoors, away from heating vents, fireplaces, and direct sunlight.
  • Water regularly to keep the soil consistently moist, but not soggy. Check the soil daily—tabletop trees can dry out quickly in heated rooms.
  • Avoid decorating with heavy ornaments or wrapping lights too tightly, which can damage branches.
  • Limit the tree's time indoors to about 10–14 days if possible. The shorter the indoor stay, the better for its health.

After the Holidays

  • Do not place the tree outdoors immediately if temperatures are below freezing. Instead, move it to a transitional space such as a garage, enclosed porch, or cold mudroom where it's protected from wind and extreme cold.
  • Allow it to go dormant (a form of winter rest) gradually, keeping it in its container and checking soil moisture every few days.
  • Once nighttime temperatures are consistently above freezing, you can transition the tree to an outdoor, sheltered spot.

Preparing to Plant (Spring)

  • Choose a planting location with full sun and well-drained soil.
  • Dig a hole twice as wide and the same depth as the root ball. Loosen soil at the bottom and sides.
  • Gently remove the tree from its container, loosen any circling roots, and place it in the hole.
  • Backfill with native soil, gently firming as you go. Water deeply after planting.
  • Apply a 2–3 inch layer of mulch around the base (keeping it a few inches away from the trunk) to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
  • Water regularly through the first growing season, especially during dry spells. Consistent moisture is key to helping the tree establish roots.

Long-Term Success

  • Avoid fertilizing during the first season and let the tree focus on root growth.
  • Using a small fence or wrap, protect from deer or rabbits if those are common in your area.
  • Monitor new growth in spring as a sign of successful establishment.
  • With proper care indoors and a thoughtful transition outdoors, your Jackson & Perkins live tree can flourish as a long-term part of the landscape.

The Gift That Keeps Growing

These live decorated trees are enduring gifts that offer presence now and permanence later. Each one reflects a deep respect for nature, tradition, and the individuals who make your year special. With a tree from Jackson & Perkins, you're quietly saying: you matter, this moment matters, and beauty belongs in every season.
