Description

A Unique Selection with a Tidy Habit and Unusual Variegation

Farwest Show Judge's Choice Award of Merit 2022

A Proven Winners® ColorChoice® Flowering Shrubs variety, Weigela Vinho Verde™ is a deciduous perennial shrub offering spring through autumn interest, blooming late spring and early summer. This unique plant was selected after years of positive evaluations in trial gardens and is primarily grown for its neat and tidy habit of unusually variegated lime green leaves that have a bold black margin. It also sets a light crop of tubular red-pink blooms.

An excellent landscape plant, Weigela Vinho Verde has good vigor and a tidy, upright, rounded, dome-shaped habit. Like all variegated plants, it will occasionally revert, but it reverts to all black. It is an excellent specimen in garden or container but is shown to best effect when grouped or massed in beds and borders.

Easy to grow, weigela grows best in sunny to partly shady locations with moderately fertile, moist, well-draining soil but tolerates clay soil. Deer resistant.

Named for a special wine from Portugal, Vinho Verde, for it crisp, refreshing effect, this variety was discovered as a variegated sport on a seedling whose parents were golden 'Briant's Rubidor' and burgundy 'Naomi Campbell'.
