Plant Tulipa Grand Perfection tulip bulbs in autumn before the first frost and watch as mid-spring brings forth their bodacious blooms, bursting with striking color. A true Rembrandt tulip, Grand Perfection showcases flamed flowers with painterly red brushstrokes that run the full length of each petal. The blooms open with a buttery yellow hue that gradually matures to white, creating a stunning contrast as they age. These fabulous funnel-shaped flowers, standing 14 to 16 inches tall, are supported by sturdy stems and are complemented by attractive, strappy glaucous-green leaves, making them a captivating addition to any garden. Their unique appearance also makes them ideal for creating extraordinary bouquets and masterful mixed floral arrangements.
Grand Perfection, a Tulipa gesneriana cultivar, is a perennial bulb often grown as an annual. In optimal conditions, these tulips may naturalize, allowing them to return year after year. They are most impressive when planted in groups, whether in beds, borders, or sweeping drifts under deciduous trees. Their ability to mix well with other spring-blooming bulbs and extend the flowering season makes them an excellent choice for various garden styles, including cottage, informal, and rock gardens. Additionally, tulips are effective as ground cover, helping to control erosion during spring rains. They also thrive in patio pots and can be forced to bloom indoors during the winter months.
Grand Perfection tulips are easy to grow and maintain, thriving in cold climates down to USDA Zone 3. While they prefer sunny locations, a bit of light shade in warmer areas can help extend their bloom time by keeping them cool. These tulips grow best in well-draining, nutrient-rich soil with a neutral to slightly acidic pH. When planting, ensure the bulbs are spaced 4 to 8 inches apart and planted 4 to 8 inches deep. To promote robust growth and abundant blooms, apply a balanced fertilizer like Espoma Organic® Bulb-tone® Bulb and Flower Food as soon as new growth appears in the spring. For the best results, remove spent flowers promptly, but allow the leaves to yellow and wither naturally before cutting them back, as this nourishes the bulbs for future growth. In USDA Zones 8-10, refrigerate the bulbs for at least eight weeks before planting.
