Narcissus Pheasant's Eye Bulbs

One of the last daffodils to bloom in spring, the rare and treasured Narcissus poeticus var. recurvus is also among the most spectacular. Fragrant, unusually shaped, and very eye-catching (so to speak), this heirloom is a must-have for any gardener who loves the bulbs of spring.

First mentioned in European gardens in 1831 (but native to Turkey), Narcissus poeticus var recurvus is a very late-blooming variety with a large, rounded perianth and a tiny center of lime green ringed with a small cup of yellow edged in red. Wow!

And Narcissus Pheasant's Eye is fragrant—sweet and long-lasting, the aroma may turn out to be the thing you love most about this daffodil. The bloomstalks stand about 15 to 18 inches high and are reasonably long-lasting, seeing out the daffodil season in style.

Unlike most other daffodils, Pheasant's Eye doesn't mind soil that stays a bit moist—one might even say too moist—over time. It needs good soil drainage, but is more tolerant of wet conditions than just about any other we have seen. This is a boon in areas of high rainfall and wet winters.

And Pheasant's Eye will naturalize over time. It is a very dependable presence, but it takes its own sweet time to set new bulbils. Plan for the long term with Pheasant's Eye, and your patience will be very richly rewarded.
