Lush, finely cut fronds reach several feet long and point almost straight up on this fine shade perennial.
Easy to grow and so profuse, Matteuccia struthiopteris, the ostrich fern, is having a moment in American gardens. This very cold-hardy, adaptable fern looks like it just came from the hot-house, but in fact, it stands up to severe weather and other garden stressors beautifully. Just give Matteuccia struthiopteris well-drained soil with regular watering, and it will show off for many seasons in partial to full shade.
These fronds are long, pointed, and very finely cut, really resembling the ostrich feathers for which they are named. Use them in indoor arrangements for the vase and as living decor for the home. Or let them simply plume out on the plant 3 seasons a year, filling the border and other shady spots with rich spring-green color and lacy texture.
Matteuccia struthiopteris (ostrich fern) reaches up to 5 feet high and 3 feet wide, slowly spreading over several years. It is a fine presence in the middle to back of the border, and makes a stunning specimen or a mass planting. Combine it with large-leaf hostas for great contrast. Very easy to grow, it will transform those dark garden spots to living fountains of color.
