In 1998, this distinguished rose won an All-American Rose Selections award, the first true red hybrid tea to do so in 14 years. A sensational cut rose, Opening Night starts off with lovely pointed, ovoid buds that unfurl to reveal 25 to 30 large, thick, velvety petals. The 5-inch blooms stand atop strong 18-inch stems and have a light sweet fragrance that only adds to their appeal. With good substance and beautiful form, these blooms are long-lasting in garden or vase.
The plant is lovely in its own right, offering an upright, slightly spreading habit of matte, dark green leaves that make a gorgeous backdrop for the deep red flowers. Reaching a mature size of just 4½ feet high and 3 feet wide, it's suitable for a variety of gardening applications, from beds and mixed perennial borders to low hedges, the cut garden, and even large patio containers.
