Foliage dies down weeks before the blooms appear.
Magic Lily's astonishing enchantment comes from its dramatic rebirth in late summer. In early spring, the plants emerge with shiny green leaves that provide a beautiful base to a sun-filled garden. As they die back in early summer, other summer-blooming plants take over and make themselves known. Then, in late summer, the trumpet-like rosy blooms of the Magic Lily magically appear out of nowhere on long, clean stalks to dress up your garden all over again.
The Magic Lily hides another secret. It's not a lily; it's actually an amaryllis. It has been referred to as a Hurricane Lily because it tends to flower after drenching storms.
Plant the bulbs in full sun and don't let the soil puddle with moisture and your flowers will bloom in abundance. One of the other magical aspects of this plant is that it only begins to bloom in the second year after planting. That means just when you've forgotten about it, it will remind you with its 2- to 3-inch pink blooms with juicy golden throats.
