Description
A dazzling compact hydrangea

Magical® Ruby Snow is a compact shrub that brings year-round beauty to any garden. Growing to just 3 to 4 feet tall and 4 to 5 feet wide, this hardy, free-flowering panicle hydrangea is perfect for smaller gardens and blends beautifully with perennial flowers. It blooms on new wood starting in midsummer and continues to flourish well into the fall.

The large, pyramidal mopheads of Magical Ruby Snow initially emerge in a gleaming icy white color. As the days shorten and the nights cool with the transition from summer to fall, the flower heads undergo a stunning transformation. Starting from the base, they first turn soft pink and then gradually intensify to a rich ruby red, while a snowy white cone remains at the top. These billowy bicolor blooms, borne on sturdy stems, are long-lasting and ideal for fresh or dried floral displays. Left in the garden, the flower clusters turn tan to caramel in winter, adding texture to the off-season landscape and providing a nesting habitat for bees.

Known botanically as Hydrangea paniculata, commonly referred to as panicle hydrangea, Ruby Snow has an upright habit, making it a perfect choice for mixed beds, borders, or foundation plantings. It can be used as a specimen plant or mass-planted for a more dramatic effect and is an absolute must for cutting gardens.

Panicle hydrangeas are among the easiest hydrangeas to grow, and Ruby Snow is no exception. It resists pests and diseases and tolerates more sun and drought than other hydrangea varieties. Ruby Snow is tough, reliable, and cold hardy to Zone 4. It thrives in sunny to partially shady locations with average, moist to dry, well-draining soil. In southern regions, it may benefit from some afternoon shade. To keep the shrub compact and encourage heavy branching and flowering, prune it back by one-third to one-half of its total height in early spring after the last frost date in your area.

As temperatures drop, some Hydrangea paniculata varieties reward gardeners with soft pink or red hues. This natural shift depends on cool nights and the plant's genetics. In mild climates, blooms may retain their creamy white beauty.
