The most productive daylily in the world, Hemerocallis 'Stella de Oro' is flower machine in the sunny border.
Hemerocallis 'Stella de Oro' has been the classic name in daylilies for decades, and we must add our voices to the chorus of praise this variety has received. It outlasts all others we have grown, beginning the season earlier and finishing later, with hundreds of blooms in between.
Hemerocallis 'Stella de Oro' offers brilliant yellow-gold flowers, about 2½ to 2¾ inches in diameter, that (like all daylilies) last only one day, to be replaced by more the following morning. A mature plant will set more than 400 blooms in a single season, and can bloom for 5 months or more in the sunny border or meadow garden. There is simply nothing to compare it to for bloom strength
Hemerocallis 'Stella de Oro' is easy to grow. Just 24 inches high and wide, on average (daylilies are divided every few years to maintain their blooming ability, so they may be smaller or larger, depending on how recently they have been divided), it is dense and well-branched, with dark green, strappy foliage set below the long, slender bloom spikes (each boasting many buds). 'Stella de Oro' loves sunshine and well-drained soil, but needs little else to keep growing and flowering contentedly for years.
All daylilies grow readily, but Hemerocallis 'Stella de Oro' is in a different class altogether. This plant withstands the heat, humidity, and periods of drought found in summer weather, then tolerates extreme cold in winter. Neither poor soil nor urban pollution is a problem. Hemerocallis 'Stella de Oro' is ready to stand up to the worst that Mother Nature can deal out, and still flower effortlessly, day after day.
Make 'Stella de Oro' an integral part of your perennial border, and consider using it as an accent around shrubs, in the spring-blooming bulb garden (its foliage makes an excellent cover-up to the browning stems of daylilies and tulips as spring turns to summer), along the baking-hot driveway (extreme conditions are no problem!), and even in patio containers, where its beautiful flowers can be enjoyed up close. Every three to four years, divide the plant into multiple new 'Stellas,' and enjoy this exceptional perennial for countless seasons to come.
