Fritillaria persica Crown Imperial Bulbs

Plant Fritillaria persica bulbs in fall before the first frost, and by mid-spring, each bulb will produce a striking 30-inch spike adorned with linear grey-green leaves and up to 30 bell-shaped pendant flowers. An heirloom variety, Fritillaria persica is celebrated for the exotic elegance of its distinctive blooms, which range from grey-green to plum-purple (almost blackish). These nectar-rich, dramatic flowers not only draw attention in the garden but also attract pollinators like bees and butterflies. As cut flowers, they add a modern flair to any floral display, making them a standout choice for both garden and vase.

Fritillaria persica, commonly known as Persian lily or Persian fritillary, is a species native to Israel, Jordan, Iran, Syria, and Turkey. This bulbous perennial with an upright habit creates a stunning specimen plant on its own. However, Persian lilies are most effective when clustered or grouped in garden beds or borders, where they add significant curb appeal and vertical interest. The bulbs multiply well, and under optimal conditions, the display will spread and improve year after year. These lilies can also be grown in large containers, offering flexibility in garden design.

For best results, plant Persian lily bulbs 8 inches apart and 5 to 6 inches deep, setting them at a 45-degree angle to prevent water from sitting in the bulbs' stem hole. Water well to settle the bulbs, and feed them with a balanced fertilizer. Position the bulbs in a sunny to partially shady spot with medium moist, well-draining soil. After blooming, allow the foliage to die back naturally before removing it, as the leaves continue to nourish the bulbs, promoting future growth and flowering. Persian lilies are cold hardy to USDA Zone 4 and are deer resistant, making them a low-maintenance and resilient addition to your garden.
