Boston Fern Care Guide

ARRIVAL:

Open your gift and unwrap the container, then follow the instructions below carefully to grow and enjoy a healthy plant.

PLACEMENT:

Display your fern where it will receive plenty of bright indirect light. Too much direct sunlight will burn the fronds; too much shade will produce sparse fronds. It will thrive in a high humidity environment with temperatures of around 65° to 75°F during the day and around 55°F at night. It will not tolerate cold temperatures below 35°F or hot temperatures above 95°F.

WATER/FEEDING:

Keep the soil evenly moist, but not soggy. Water when the soil surface is dry to the touch. Be sure to drain excess water so there is no standing water at the bottom of the container. Between waterings, do not allow the plant to dry out completely. If the soil dries out, the foliage will dry up and fall off the plant. Ferns prefer humidity and, in drier environments, will benefit from having their foliage misted.

Apply a complete liquid fertilizer every 4 weeks at 1/2 strength throughout the growing period, typically from spring to midsummer.

Jackson & Perkins offers a selection of fertilizer & plant care products. We suggest using AlgoPlus fertilizer for the general health and maintenance of your plant.

TRANSPLANTING:

When your plant has outgrown its current pot, transplant in early spring, if possible, or divide by cutting off sections of the fern, with healthy roots intact, and repot to create more plants. With each repotting, increase the pot size 1 to 2 inches and use fresh, high-quality potting soil. After transplanting, it is important to keep the soil moist, but not soggy.

IMPORTANT: Ornamental plant material should not be eaten. Keep away from pets and children.
