Digitalis 'Dalmatian Rose' Foxglove brings the classic elegance of foxglove spires to the garden in its very first year. Strong, upright stems carry rose-purple blooms from late spring into midsummer above compact foliage. Well-branched and tidy, the plant reaches about 20 inches tall and 14 inches wide, offering graceful vertical form on a refined scale.
These spires are especially lovely as cut flowers, bringing charm to spring bouquets, and the plant is well suited to larger containers. Its flowers draw bees, hummingbirds, and birds, while deer and rabbits tend to pass it by. Plant in drifts for an elegant vertical accent. All parts of foxglove are toxic if ingested, so choose its placement thoughtfully.
Plant in full sun to part shade with medium water and average to moist soil; clay and acidic soils are well tolerated. Hardy in Zones 5 to 9. Deadhead the first year stems to encourage the plant to overwinter and flower again in its second season. Allowed to set seed, it will self sow. The wild species is native to the UK and has naturalized in the U.S. Generous first year flowering gives 'Dalmatian Rose' immediate presence in the garden.
