Description
The Sweetheart Rose and a French Polyantha Rose Favorite Since 1881

Once a mainstay of gentlemen's lapels

Cécile Brunner is a rambling/climbing hybrid tea rose popular since the Victorian era. The small blooms are almost perfectly shaped, add to that their evocative scent, dainty form, and long, strong stems. While robust, the plant is just the right size for a garden feature, container, or mass display along the bed, border, or walkway. Cécile Brunner is a festive rose you will want to make a part of your garden and display indoors and out.

The 2-inch, fully double flowers rise from long, pointed buds, with soft pink exteriors and a deeper pink center. The fragrance is sweet and long-lasting, never overpowering but definitely rich. And Cécile Brunner is a very long-blooming rose, giving you armloads of miniature rose blooms over many weeks. A sport of the classic French polyantha, this vigorous rose climbs and rambles freely, setting perfect blooms along the way.

Introduced in 1881 by Pernet-Ducher, Cécile Brunner is also called The Sweetheart Rose, Mignon, and Mademoiselle Cécile Brunner. Whatever name you choose, you will love this free-blooming, compact climbing rose. Its vigorous but well-mannered growth habit makes it an excellent choice for trellises, arbors, and pergolas, adding old-world charm to the landscape. Left to its own devices, it forms a graceful arching shrub, but it can also be trained as a climbing rose, reaching heights of 10 to 20 feet.

This rose is highly disease-resistant, requiring minimal maintenance to keep its foliage lush and its blooms abundant. It is also exceptionally drought-tolerant once established, making it a great choice for low-maintenance gardens. The sheer volume of blooms ensures a near-constant floral display, and the long, slender stems make it a favorite for cut arrangements, filling vases with its delicate pink petals and light, nostalgic fragrance.

A perfect selection for cottage gardens, vintage-inspired landscapes, and romantic outdoor settings, Cécile Brunner rose attracts pollinators like butterflies and bees while remaining largely unbothered by pests. With its ability to thrive in a variety of climates and its generous flowering habit, this cherished rose is an enduring symbol of beauty and resilience, ready to become a treasured part of your garden for generations to come.

Cecille Brunner Climbing Rose
This shopper rated the product 2 out of 5 stars

I am very well acquainted with this particular variety of Climbing Rose. I have had an entire fence line made up of them and their long, long canes and perfect corsage size blooms. An overall perfect rose. That it why it is still in cultivation for so many decades. However, the rose that I just received from J&P was a very poor specimen. It was delivered very late for planting in my area (Zone 9) and had a short, almost non-existent root system, and had only one (maybe) OK cane with another poor cane. Definitely not a grade one rose. Perhaps a grade 2 at best. The other rose that I ordered at the same time has still not been delivered, and I have been told that it's in a pot (so the roots are cut even shorter) and it is almost April. What happened to J&P? They used to sell quality roses at a reasonable price. Very disappointed.

Bought to replace long time owned Cecile Bruner and very happy with replacement from Jackson and Perkins in 2024. Very healthy grower!

Precious blooms

I just ordered a Cecil Brunner and cannot wait to get it into the ground. I had moved in 2015 and had to leave the one I had planted in 2000 and have missed this little rose ever since. It is perfect for drying in potpourris or for just having by itself in a pretty glass next to your bed. I look forward to this growing on the beautiful pergola my husband just built me at the entrance to my garden. It will be a very welcoming plant.
