Description
A native fern with delicate fronds that thrives in temperate gardens

Athyrium Lady Fern is an adaptable, deciduous native fern that reaches a mature height of 12 to 36 inches. Despite its dainty appearance, this hardy perennial makes a bold statement with its feathery, light green fronds that grow in an upright, circular clump, bringing elegance to your garden for three seasons. Its compact size makes it an excellent choice for small-space gardens or shaded borders.

Athyrium filix-femina, commonly called lady fern, is a resilient perennial (Zones 3-9) with an extensive native range across North America. Naturally found in moist woods, thickets, meadows, and ravines, lady fern thrives near shady streams and ponds but adapts beautifully to shade gardens, woodland plantings, or even rock gardens. It also serves as an excellent erosion control plant on slopes. Pair it with trilliums and Virginia bluebells for a stunning woodland display. Sadly, cinnamon fern populations in the wild are now endangered, but you can support their survival by planting them in your garden. Our plants are nursery-propagated and always commercially grown, never harvested from the wild.

Lady fern is a dependable, low-maintenance plant. It grows best in humus-rich, well-drained soil but tolerates average, moist conditions and even adapts to less-than-ideal environments. Avoid waterlogged soil to prevent crown rot, its primary concern. Once established, this native fern requires minimal attention but benefits from regular watering, a layer of mulch, and the removal of old fronds to maintain its best appearance, especially in sunnier spots.

Plant Athyrium Lady Fern roots in spring, spacing them 18 inches apart and setting them 1/2 inch deep.
