Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit
An award-winning Acer palmatum, Acer 'Bloodgood' possesses such exceptional qualities that it is considered one of the very best purple-leafed Japanese maples. Its non-dissected deep reddish purple leaves retain their color through summer and brighten to crimson red in fall. Small purplish red spring flowers are followed by samara fruits that ripen in late summer and early autumn. The seeds are a welcome treat for a variety of birds.
A vigorous deciduous tree with a rounded habit, it typically grows to 15-20 feet tall and wide. Acer 'Bloodgood' is a showy specimen or accent tree but also a lovely shade tree. It can tolerate a wide range of soils and can be grown in full sun to part shade. In warmer, drier climates, afternoon shade is preferable and mulching around the base is recommended to keep roots moist and cool. Fertilize in spring and prune, if necessary, in the dormant season.
To maximize the benefits of water, fertilizer, and mulch we suggest using the Greenwell™ Water Saver
