A Proven Winners® ColorChoice® Flowering Shrubs variety, Weigela Bubbly Wine™ is a deciduous shrub offering 3 seasons of interest. Mainly grown for its variegated foliage, the petite plant has small, brightly colored leaves in hues of yellow, green, and burgundy. Although occasional reversions occur (like in all variegated plants), this shrub has been quite stable. After the leaves have emerged, Bubbly Wine blooms in late spring to early summer. The small bell-shaped pink flowers freely bloom, attracting pollinators, including hummingbirds.
Weigela Bubbly Wine has a multi-stemmed, compact, mounded growth habit, reaching a mature size of 2 to 3 feet high and wide. It is an excellent specimen in garden or container but is shown to best effect when grouped or massed in beds, borders, and foundation plantings.
Cold hardy to Zone 4 and easy care, weigela grows best in sunny to partly sunny locations with moderately fertile, moist, well-draining soil, but adapts to most soils. Bubbly Wine is deer resistant. It blooms on old wood, so any pruning should be done just after flowering.
