Description
Vigorous, high-yield blueberry perfect for southern gardens

Vaccinium Bless Your Heart® Blueberry is a standout variety from the Southern Living DownHome Harvest® Collection, renowned for its superior vigor, higher yields, and exceptional fruit quality. This improved rabbiteye blueberry, a species of Vaccinium ashei, thrives in the heat and humidity of the Southeastern United States, making it an ideal choice for Southern gardens.

Highly ornamental, blueberry plants like Bless Your Heart add beauty and functionality to any edible landscape. This compact bush features an upright habit and moderate growth rate, maturing at approximately 4 to 5 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide. It blooms late, avoiding frost damage, and sets charming bell-shaped white flowers. The plant ripens quickly, producing abundant clusters of firm, sweet, medium to large blueberries with excellent flavor, beautiful color, and long shelf life. Not only does it attract birds and butterflies, but its foliage also turns vibrant shades of red and orange in autumn, adding seasonal interest.

Bless Your Heart is versatile in the garden. Plant it in mixed beds, borders, containers, or woodland gardens, or use it as a low hedge or privacy screen. Ensure adequate space for healthy root development, as blueberry bushes have shallow, fibrous roots that require consistent moisture and good drainage. For optimal fruiting and color, plant in full sun with acidic soil (pH 4.5-5.2) and fertilize yearly in spring. Any necessary pruning should be done after fruiting to maintain plant health and productivity. Additionally, this variety is disease and pest resistant, making it a low-maintenance addition to your garden.

While rabbiteye blueberries are self-pollinating, planting two or more varieties with similar bloom times enhances cross-pollination, leading to larger yields and bigger berries. To extend your blueberry harvest from early June through late summer, consider planting early, mid-season, and late-fruiting varieties together.
