A compact flowering deciduous tree, Styrax APrystine Spire™ is prized for its unusual columnar structure of glossy dark green leaves as well as its abundant flowering in late spring and early summer, when clusters of fragrant bell-shaped white flowers beautifully cascade from its erect branches. These nectar-rich blossoms are a feast for bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds, adding a lively buzz to your garden, and they are followed by ornamental fruit, or drupes, that birds find irresistible. The tree's bark is another attractive feature: a grey-brown color, it is smooth in its youth but develops a stunning fissured appearance as it matures, for even more visual interest.
As a Styrax japonicus species, also known as the Japanese snowbell, APrystine Spire stands out from the crowd with its slender, upright form. Unlike the typical broad canopy of horizontal branches found in most Japanese snowbell varieties, this tree has a unique, narrow structure. With a moderate growth rate, it reaches a mature size of 15 to 20 feet in height and 6 to 8 feet in width. Japanese snowbell is an excellent choice as a standalone specimen, especially for limited spaces, or as a charming accent in mixed beds.
For optimal growth, the Japanese snowbell thrives in sunny locations with organic, moist, well-draining soil with an acidic pH between 5.5 and 6.5.
