Sempervivum 'Pacific Blue Ice' Hens & Chicks is an evergreen perennial prized for its mat-forming characteristics. This succulent has a distinctive icy blue-green hue that transitions to a rosy center, which is more pronounced in cooler climates. 'Pacific Blue Ice' grows as a large rosette, or 'hen', and multiplies by producing smaller rosettes, or 'chicks', around it. After the hen flowers, it naturally dies, allowing the chicks to mature into hens themselves. These plants can be easily propagated by uprooting the chicks and replanting them.
With their architectural form and adaptability, hens & chicks are perfect for adding structure and interest to your garden. They thrive in the nooks and crannies of dry stone walls or rock gardens and are an excellent choice for xeriscapes and alpine gardens. When planted en masse, they create an attractive ground cover for smaller spaces. They also make striking indoor or outdoor container plants.
Hens and chicks are cold hardy plants that require little to no maintenance and can flourish in a variety of conditions. They prefer sunny locations but can tolerate some light shade, especially in hot summer climates. They adapt well to different soil types, but perform best in average, dry to medium moist, well-draining, gritty soils with a slightly acidic pH, ranging from 5.8 to 6.5. Hens & chicks tolerate drought and resist pests, disease, deer, and rabbits. About the only thing that can harm these resilient plants is excessive moisture.
