Papaver Collection Poppy

This Poppy Collection beautifully combines two striking varieties—Papaver rhoeas Red and Papaver nudicaule 'Pink Ruffles'—for an unforgettable spring (southern zones) or summer display (northern zones). Each collection includes five roots of each variety, individually packaged and labeled for easy planting. These poppies grow 18 to 24 inches tall and produce a profusion of delicate blooms on bristly stems. The vibrant flowers are set against thistle-like gray-green foliage, creating an airy, ethereal effect in the garden. Bees and butterflies are drawn to the blooms, which also make stunning cut-flower bouquets. For best results, harvest flowers just as the buds begin to open and sear the ends of the stems to extend their freshness.

Poppy Collection varieties are hardy, clump-forming perennials (Zones 3-8) that expand gracefully over time without becoming invasive. These poppies are ideal for grouping or massing in beds and borders, where their colors truly shine. They can also be forced indoors with proper care for early blooms.

These poppies thrive in cooler spring and fall temperatures, performing best in sunny locations with rich, well-drained soil. While they can adapt to average or even poor soils, they cannot tolerate overly wet conditions. In the South, they may struggle with intense summer heat and humidity. For Zones 3-6, adding a layer of mulch or pine needles in winter offers extra protection. Allow the plants to naturally die back after blooming in summer and cease watering during this dormant period to prevent root rot. Naturally deer resistant, these poppies are a low-maintenance garden favorite.

Plant roots in spring, spacing them 12 to 18 inches apart. Once established, poppies dislike being disturbed, so choose their location carefully. If necessary, divide or move the plants in fall to avoid disrupting their growth.
