Description
RHS Award-Winning Vine for Patio Tubs, Mailboxes, and Twining Through Roses

Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit

Like crushed velvet, the midnight-red blooms of Clematis 'Niobe' glow with rich color, brilliantly offset by a slender, prominent center of bright yellow. Simply the best red clematis we know, Clematis 'Niobe' is floriferous and blooms over a long summer season on compact, manageable 8- to 10-foot vines. It complements all your pink, blue, and purple clematis magnificently, and makes a magnificent solitary planting in its own right.

These 4-inch blooms simply radiate bright color from late spring to early autumn. One of the best where summers are especially hot, it keeps going when lesser plants melt out in the heat and humidity. And every flower is a masterpiece, suffused with a ruby glow you'd expect to shine in the dark. The flowers open nearly black, then mature to deep red: a fantastic effect on a fully blooming plant.

A Proven Winner® Proven Selection®, Clematis 'Niobe' is renowned for its rock-solid performance and reliability. It exceeded all expectations time and again in trial gardens all around the world, and customers have only echoed the sentiment.

Just the right size for the mailbox, pillar, or container of any type, Clematis 'Niobe' reaches 8 to 10 feet high and about 3 to 4 feet wide. Try a large planting along an ugly chain-link fence or a stone wall: your landscape will be transformed.

Clematis 'Niobe' is easy to grow in a rich, porous, alkaline soil with plenty of room for the roots to spread. Best performance is when the tops are in full sunlight and the roots are shaded, so apply a generous mulch or a shallow-rooted groundcover near the base of the vine. Very reliable performers once established, they take a season or two to get going. Clematis 'Niobe' is a Group II clematis for pruning purposes, which means that in early spring you should cut back the vine 6 or 8 inches to the nearest pair of strong leaf axil buds.

Arrived too early but seems healthy
This shopper rated the product 3 out of 5 stars

I did a pre-order on this clematis, and it arrived about a month too early, per your own website stating when perennials should be shipped to my zone (8a). We were still having some very frigid nights, so I was worried. I did reach out to customer service for advice, but it took 2 weeks to receive a response, so I had to do what I thought was best. I ended up planting it but mulching heavily and covering it every night below freezing temps. Now that we've warmed up, it is putting out new leaves and appears to be thriving. It's much too early to know how it will do long-term (blooming etc.), but it does appear to have survived the cold and looks healthy. I just wish it had shipped in late May, per your website, rather than late February! I would not do a pre-order again for this reason.

clematis arrived
This shopper rated the product 2 out of 5 stars

Our plants finely arrived a bit disheveled, one was totally out of the pot with root ball damage. They are very small! Not what we thought we were getting by any stretch of thee imagination. They are planted and seem to be doing well . We will see how they do over the winter. Communication from you all was scant to say the least. A disappointment for sure. Not sure we would order a shrub plant/vine from you again .
