Description
Perfect for indoor forcing, even in water, with fragrant white blooms

Paperwhites are the all-time favorite flowering bulbs for forcing and growing indoors, thanks to their reliability and ease of care—no cold exposure, special handling, or treatment required. The Mammoth variety boasts exceptionally large bulbs, which should be spaced further apart than usual. Once potted, these bulbs bloom within 4 to 6 weeks, producing clusters of wonderfully fragrant white flowers. Each bulb typically generates 3 to 4 long, slender stems that reach heights of 12 to 24 inches. While Paperwhites grow beautifully in patio pots, they are equally stunning when grown in water, anchored by pebbles or stones in a clear glass vase for a stylish and elegant display.

Mammoth is a variety of Narcissus papyraceus, commonly known as paperwhites, and can also be grown outdoors, where their fragrant flowers attract butterflies and hummingbirds. Though often grown in containers, paperwhites can be planted in the garden just like any other narcissus. When planted in the fall before the first frost, these bulbs will bloom in late winter or early spring, depending on the climate. In USDA Zones 8-10, they may even naturalize under optimal conditions, given adequate space, sunlight, water, and fertilizer. Paperwhites look their best when planted in groups or masses, creating a delightful display of fragrance and color.

Mammoth paperwhites are bulbous perennials that are incredibly easy to grow and maintain. They thrive in sunny to partly shady locations with rich, fertile, well-draining soil that has a neutral to slightly acidic pH (6.0-7.0). Water the paperwhites during their growth period, but avoid soggy soils, as the bulbs do not tolerate excess moisture. When planting, space the bulbs 6 to 8 inches apart and plant them 6 inches deep. For robust flowering, feed the bulbs with a balanced fertilizer like Espoma Organic® Bulb-tone® Bulb and Flower Food as soon as new growth appears in the spring. After flowering, allow the foliage to die back naturally before cutting it away, as the leaves continue to nourish the bulbs, ensuring future growth and blooming. Mammoth paperwhites are also relatively pest-free and deer-resistant, making them a low-maintenance and reliable choice for both indoor and outdoor gardens.
