Matteuccia Ostrich Fern

Matteuccia struthiopteris, commonly known as ostrich fern, is a timeless favorite renowned for its arching, vase-shaped fronds that resemble delicate ostrich feathers. This graceful perennial grows up to 36 inches tall and wide, with larger growth in optimal conditions. Its finely textured canopy adds elegance and a cooling effect to the landscape. Perfect for modern or Victorian-inspired gardens, ostrich ferns are enjoying renewed popularity, loved for their beauty, hardiness, and ease of growth.

Native to northern regions, ostrich ferns thrive in Zones 4-9 and form expansive colonies as they mature. They are ideal for moist areas near ponds, streams, or water gardens, as well as shaded woodland settings or wild gardens. Their lush greenery pairs beautifully with other shade-loving plants to create a serene, natural atmosphere. Sadly, cinnamon fern populations in the wild are now endangered, but you can support their survival by planting them in your garden. Our plants are nursery-propagated and always commercially grown, never harvested from the wild.

This low-maintenance fern grows best in dappled shade with light, highly organic soil and consistent moisture, especially when establishing. While shade or partial shade is ideal, ostrich ferns can adapt to varied light conditions, including some sun. Plant ostrich fern roots in spring, spacing them 18 inches apart. Ensure crowns are set at or just below soil level for optimal growth.
