Iris Picasso Dutch Iris Bulbs

Iris Picasso is a striking Dutch iris that can be planted in fall or spring and is often grown as an annual in colder climates. By late spring, this iris transforms your garden into a vibrant canvas, with its grassy green leaves providing the perfect backdrop for large, sculptural flowers. The blooms are truly works of art, featuring standards in shades of lavender and purple, and golden yellow falls adorned with bronze brushstroke veins. These exotic flowers, perched atop 20-inch-tall stems, are not only eye-catching in the garden but also make excellent cut flowers for stunning floral arrangements.

Picasso, an Iris x hollandica species commonly known as Dutch iris, is a bulbous perennial with a columnar, upright habit. It naturalizes easily in USDA Zones 6-8, forming beautiful, low-maintenance clusters in flower beds and borders that return year after year. For the most dramatic visual impact, plant Picasso irises in large, sweeping drifts, or use them to add a splash of color to patio pots.

To plant Picasso iris bulbs, space them 4 inches apart and 5 inches deep. For a broad, colorful display, consider planting about 15 bulbs per square foot. Choose a sheltered, sunny to partially shady location with reasonably fertile, well-draining soil. It's important to keep the soil moist and to avoid allowing it to dry out completely during the summer. In Zones colder than Zone 6, add a 2-inch layer of mulch in the fall for added protection. Once growth begins, feed the bulbs with a specialized bulb fertilizer to encourage robust flowering. Picasso Dutch irises are also resistant to damage from deer and rodents, making them a resilient and easy-to-care-for choice for any garden.
