American Iris Society Award of Merit
Iris 'Sugar Rush' is a captivating Siberian iris that grows 24 to 34 inches tall, blooming and reblooming from late spring through early summer. Each sturdy stem holds three bicolored blossoms that rise gracefully above a compact, vase-shaped clump of narrow, blue-green, grass-like leaves, creating a charming bouquet effect. The distinctive watermelon-pink flowers feature a blue and purple wash on the styles, pearly pink standards with yellow highlights, and veined, speckled falls with cheery yellow signals. Depending on the weather, the flowers may open in shades slightly lighter or darker, adding to their unique charm. These blooms make delightful monofloral bouquets and lovely additions to mixed floral arrangements.
An Iris sibirica variety, commonly called Siberian iris, 'Sugar Rush' is a hardy perennial suited for Zones 4-9. Its rhizomatous growth habit allows it to spread over time, making it an ideal choice for naturalizing in wild gardens or along pond edges and water gardens, provided they are not in standing water. 'Sugar Rush' also shines when grouped in flower beds and borders, adding elegance to any garden setting.
Known for its resilience, 'Sugar Rush' thrives in cooler climates and requires a cold dormant period for optimal flowering. While it prefers full sun, a touch of afternoon shade can be beneficial in hot summer regions. This iris grows best in organically rich, moist, well-draining soil with a slightly acidic pH (5.2-6.4) but tolerates drier conditions once established. Mulching with materials such as pine needles or oat straw helps conserve soil moisture. Feed annually with a nitrogen-rich fertilizer in spring and remove faded flower stalks to prevent self-seeding.
For best results, plant 'Sugar Rush' iris rhizomes with their 'eyes' just below the soil surface, spacing them 12 to 24 inches apart.
