Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit
Hymenocallis 'Sulphur Queen,' an award-winning Peruvian daffodil, showcases exotic blooms from late spring through midsummer. Rising above elegant, strappy green leaves, each 18- to 24-inch flower stalk bears 2 to 3 large, trumpet-shaped flowers. These unique blooms feature frilly-edged soft yellow cups, six slender ivory petals, and striking emerald-green throats. With their strong citrus-like fragrance, particularly at night, these flowers attract pollinators, like bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds, to the garden.
Known as ismene, spider lily, or Peruvian daffodil, 'Sulphur Queen' is a hardy perennial in Zones 8-11, where it naturalizes easily. In colder regions, treat it as an annual or lift and store the bulbs before frost for replanting the following spring. Its compact size and exotic appeal make it a perfect choice for beds, borders, or container gardens, including indoor decorative patio pots of at least 3 gallons.
'Sulphur Queen' thrives in sunny to partially shady locations with organically rich, well-draining soil. During the growing season, water freely to maintain moisture, but keep the soil dry during dormancy. Generally pest- and disease-free, this plant is low-maintenance and highly rewarding.
Plant 'Sulphur Queen' bulbs in spring once the soil has warmed and frost danger has passed. Space the bulbs 18 to 24 inches apart and plant them 2 inches deep.
