Heuchera Firefly is a cold-hardy, evergreen perennial prized for its compact, bushy basal mound of scalloped, maple- or ivy-like leaves that grow 12 to 24 inches tall. Throughout the growing season, the foliage undergoes subtle shifts in color, enhancing its visual appeal. Beginning in early summer, tall, airy panicles of tubular red flowers rise above the foliage on slender stems, adding a pop of vibrant color to the garden. While the flowers aren't the plant's most prominent feature, their abundant blooms beautifully complement the lush foliage. Deadheading the flowers after blooming will encourage additional growth and maintain the plant's vigor.
Heuchera Firefly (Syn Heuchera 'Leuchtkafer') is commonly called coral bells or alumroot. This North American native perennial is hardy in Zones 4-9. Its clump-forming habit and striking appearance make it ideal for grouping or massing in the garden. Firefly shines as an edging plant along pathways and adds texture and color to beds, borders, rock gardens, woodland areas, and containers.
Low maintenance and resilient, Firefly heuchera thrives in partial to dappled sunlight and grows best in rich, humusy, well-draining soil with a neutral to slightly acidic pH. Proper drainage is essential to prevent root rot, and a layer of winter mulch helps protect roots from heaving during freeze-thaw cycles. Deadheading faded flowers promotes continuous blooms.
For optimal growth, plant Firefly heuchera roots in spring, spacing them 12 to 18 inches apart and burying them 1½ to 2 inches deep.
