A member of the Old Garden Rose Collection, Gruss an Aachen was developed in Germany sometime before 1909 and is referred to as a polyantha rose. Although this compact shrub appears petite and dainty, it's known for having a tough, cold hardy (to Zone 4), and easy-grow nature. It blooms in flushes throughout the season, setting small, nodding clusters of large, heavy-petaled flowers, averaging 4- to 5-inch diameters, having an old-fashioned, rosette form and a light, sweet fragrance. As the baby-pink blooms open, they reveal a salmon pink center with yellow undertones and golden stamens. Each of its 40 to 50 petals blush with red highlights and age to cream, giving the bush a multicolored appearance. And the flowers make nice cut flowers for kitchen table bouquets.
Small and bushy with leathery, medium green foliage, Gruss an Aachen reaches a mature size of about 3 feet tall and wideperfect for a patio pot. This compact polyantha rose is a great option for a small-space garden bed or border, and it makes a great accent plant in any garden style.
