Freesia Double Blooming Lavender sets its beautifully fragrant flowers in summer. In mild climates (Zones 9-10), plant freesia bulbs in the fall for best results. In regions with colder winters, bulbs should be planted in early spring after the threat of frost has passed, and then lifted to overwinter. This double freesia variety boasts an ornate appearance, with abundant clusters of up to 8 trumpet-shaped flowers filled with layers of petals, giving them a full and luxurious look. The unique bluish-lavender blooms are upward facing and grow on leafless stems that rise 12 to 24 inches tall, making them a popular choice for both gardeners and pollinators. Their strong, sweet scent attracts bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds, adding both fragrance and life to your garden. Freesias are also among the world's most popular cut flowers, with their delicate, long-lasting blooms making them perfect for bouquets and mixed floral arrangements.
A Freesia hybrid, commonly known as Double Blooming Lavender, has an upright habit and thrives when grouped or planted in sweeping drifts through garden beds and borders. These stunning flowers are a must-have for any cutting garden, and planting bulbs every two weeks in the spring can extend their blooming season. Freesias can also be grown in pretty pots, whether indoors or outdoors, making them a versatile addition to any space.
To plant Freesia Double Blooming Lavender bulbs, space them 2 inches apart and 2 inches deep. For a more dramatic display, plant about 16 bulbs per square foot. Freesias are easy to grow when placed in a sunny to partially shady spot with medium moist, well-draining soil. Once growth begins, feed the bulbs with Espoma Organic® Bulb-tone® Bulb and Flower Food to encourage robust flowering. In USDA Zones colder than Zone 9, the corms will not survive the winter, so they should be dug up and overwintered, or grown as annuals.
