TIME Best Inventions 2024 Award
The Firefly Petunia™ transforms your garden with its subtle, mesmerizing glow. This remarkable glow in the dark petunia blends the beauty of nature with scientific wonder, creating a soft, green luminescence that captures the imagination. Daylight brings a simple elegance to the Firefly Petunia, while nightfall unveils its magical side, filling any space with an aura of enchantment and your garden with pollinators, including bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds.
Firefly Petunia requires no special setup to glow. Engineered with the natural bioluminescent genes of mushrooms, its blossoms of this bioluminescent petunia radiate a gentle, self-sustaining light, produced naturally as the plant absorbs sunlight by day and releases its energy after dark. The younger, newer blooms glow brightest, while the light fades as flowers age, creating a beautiful, evolving display throughout the annual plant's life cyclefrom spring through fall. Bioluminescence is best viewed by the human eye in naturally dark conditions, free of any ambient light sources. In a completely darkened room, it may take your eyes a few minutes to adjust before Firefly reveals itself to you.
What?s a common mistake when growing Firefly petunias? Not being patient enough to enjoy the glow. Your eyes need around 8 to 15 minutes to adjust to the dark so you can fully appreciate the bioluminescence. It?s worth the wait!
These luminous petunias are versatile, enhancing the atmosphere of any setting. Outdoors, they make a magical focal point in the garden; indoors, they create a peaceful ambiance, perfect for meditation or relaxation spaces. They're also an excellent choice for a fun, science-inspired project with kids, who will love watching their very own "living nightlight" grow.
This set of 3 Firefly Petunias is ideal for an 8- to 12-inch patio pot or hanging basket. Each plant matures to a compact 8 to 10 inches in height and spread. Delivered in three 45mm plantable paper pots that are ready to be planted directly into potting soilpaper liner and allwithout disturbing their roots, promoting healthy growth from the start.
To ensure the best glow, provide plenty of sunlight (6-8 hours daily) and fertilize with AlgoPlus Flowering Plants Fertilizer. Keep soil evenly moist, avoiding both overwatering and drought. Deadhead regularly and trim back leggy growth to maintain fullness. Firefly Petunias grow best in temperatures between 65 and 75°F and keep plants away from drafts and heat sources. They will not tolerate freezing conditions or prolonged temperatures above 90°F>. Indoors, keep plants away from drafts or heat sources and supplement sunlight with a grow light. For LED lights, the best light waves for indoor growth are between 400-2,000 umol/m2/s.
