These striking blooms make fantastic gifts and add a touch of elegance to your holiday decor. Each bulb produces huge, colorful flowers on stately stems that reach 18 to 30 inches tall, creating vibrant, energizing displays that brighten even the gloomiest winter days. While the long-lasting blooms are stunning, watching the plants sprout, grow, and eventually bloom is a delight all its own. Amaryllis are incredibly easy to growvirtually foolproofmaking them a perfect choice for any gardener. They can be grown as annuals or regrown year after year for ongoing enjoyment.
These South American natives belong to the genus Hippeastrum, commonly known as amaryllis. The bulbs in the Amaryllis Exotic Collector's Edition are typically grown indoors in most USDA Zones, with the exception of Zones 9-12, where they can be planted outside with protection from freezing temperatures.
To grow amaryllis indoors, choose a 6- to 8-inch container and fill it halfway with growing medium. Place the bulb on top and fill in with soil, leaving the top third of the bulb exposed above the soil surface. This allows room for watering and ensures the bulb remains stable. Amaryllis bulbs thrive in room temperatures, and exposure to sunlight will help keep the plants compact. As the flower stalk grows, rotate the pot frequently to encourage even growth and prevent the plant from toppling over.
To regrow amaryllis bulbs, cut off the flower stalk just above the neck of the bulb after flowering, but be sure to leave the foliage intact. The leaves play a crucial role in nourishing the bulb and preparing it for future growth and blooming. Place the pot in a sunny window, water only when the soil is dry, and fertilize regularly. After the danger of frost has passed in spring, move the pot outside until fall. Once frost kills the leaves, remove the foliage and allow the potted bulb to rest in a cool, dry place for 2 ½ months without watering. After the resting period, restart the growing process to enjoy another season of beautiful blooms.
If planting outdoors, space Amaryllis Exotic Collector's Edition bulbs 4 to 6 inches apart and 1 to 2 inches deep. Water well to settle the bulbs, and fertilize after the leaves appear, repeating this several times in spring. Place the bulbs in a sunny to partially shaded location with freely draining soil. When replanting bulbs outside, ensure the neck of the bulb is above ground level and follow the previous care instructions.
