Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit
Eucomis bicolor, also known as the pineapple lily, brings a touch of the tropics to your garden with its distinct and captivating appearance. Growing to 8 to 12 inches tall, this summer-blooming beauty features maroon-speckled stems topped with dense spikes of pale-green, star-shaped flowers edged in maroon. A crown of leafy bracts adds a finishing flourish, giving the flowers their pineapple-like charm. These fragrant blooms rise above a basal rosette of broad, wavy, strap-shaped leaves, creating a lush and exotic display. Long-lasting and striking, they are perfect for cutting and adding to mixed floral arrangements.
Native to South Africa, Eucomis bicolor is a tender perennial (Zones 7-10) but can be grown as an annual in cooler climates or overwintered indoors. Its tufted habit makes it ideal for garden beds and borders, where it can spread slowly when grown Zone-appropriately. Pineapple lily is equally impressive in large patio pots, where it adds tropical elegance to outdoor living spaces.
Easy to grow and maintain, pineapple lily thrives in sunny to partially shady locations, with ample sunlight promoting the best blooms. It prefers rich, moist, well-draining soil and benefits from regular watering and occasional feeding during the growing season.
For planting, wait until all danger of frost has passed and the soil is warm. Plant bulbs 1 inch deep and space them 18 inches apart.
