Dahlia Vancouver Blend varieties are dinnerplate dahlias that grow between 24 and 36 inches tall, blooming from late summer to early fall and possibly until the first frost in ideal conditions. This specialty blend features two unique varieties: Avignon® and 'Vancouver'. Harmonizing perfectly in color, height, and bloom time, these two dahlias deliver a stunning multicolor display for gardens and arrangements. The more flowers you cut, the more they bloomjust be sure to let them open almost fully before harvesting for best results.
Vancouver Blend dahlias are tender perennials (Zones 9-11) with a clump-forming, upright habit. They make a dramatic accent in beds or containers and are especially striking when grouped or massed in the back of a border. These quintessential cottage garden plants are a must-have for cutting gardens. Due to their tall stature and large blooms, staking or caging may be necessary to prevent stems from bending under the weight of their flowers.
These dahlias are easy to grow and thrive in sunny spots with rich, porous soil that drains freely but retains sufficient moisture for healthy roots. Amend heavy clay or sandy soils with organic materials such as peat moss or ground bark to improve structure. Water thoroughly after planting and continue frequent watering throughout the growing season, ensuring water reaches the roots without leaving them soggy. Pinch stems back at 8 to 10 inches tall, trim taller growth, and fertilize in early spring and late summer to encourage bushier plants and abundant blooms. Mulch to maintain soil moisture and coolness, and divide tubers in fall for future planting.
Plant tubers in warm spring soil after the last frost, spacing them 18 to 24 inches apart and planting 3 inches deep. For an early start, pot tubers indoors 4 to 6 weeks before the last frost date in 5- to 8-inch pots filled with potting mix, then transplant them outdoors when the frost risk has passed.
NOTE: In Zones 3-7, lift and store tubers indoors before frost, keeping them in dry peat moss or vermiculite at 50°F. Alternatively, grow Vancouver Blend as annuals for brilliant seasonal blooms in any region.
