Begonia 'Golden Balcony' Bulbs

'Golden Balcony' is a tuberous begonia cherished for its large, showy flowers that commence blooming in early summer. These frilly double blossoms, presented in clusters on robust, succulent stems adorned with broad, glossy leaves, exhibit a delightful mix of orange and yellow hues. Typically cultivated as an annual, this tender perennial (suitable for Zones 9-10) reaches a mature height of approximately 6 to 8 inches and features a cascading habit, making it an ideal choice for containers, window boxes, and hanging baskets.

'Golden Balcony' belongs to the Begonia boliviensis species, commonly known as begonia, indigenous to Bolivia and Peru. While begonias thrive in warm climates, they are not suited for the hot, arid environments of the desert Southwest or the extreme heat of the Deep South.

'Golden Balcony' flourishes best in partially shaded locations. It can endure deeper shade and continue to bloom; however, optimal flowering occurs with some sunlight, preferably morning sun accompanied by afternoon shade in warmer regions. Tuberous begonias favor slightly acidic soil (pH 5.5-6.5) enriched with organic matter and maintained with consistent moisture. To prevent tuber rot, ensure the soil drains rapidly and thoroughly, avoiding soggy conditions. Regularly remove spent flowers and leaves to encourage continuous blooming. Additionally, 'Golden Balcony' begonia is resistant to deer.

Plant 'Golden Balcony' begonia bulbs in groups within warmed spring soil after the danger of frost has subsided, spacing them 6 to 8 inches apart and planting 1 to 2 inches deep with the concave side facing upward. In northern regions, initiate tubers indoors from late winter to early spring, placing one tuber per 7- to 10-inch pot, and relocate them outdoors when conditions are favorable.
