Plant GMO-free, 2-year-old roots in early spring once frost danger has passed. Space roots 12 to 18 inches apart, covering them with 2 inches of soil, or plant in 4-foot trenches for larger crops. A dozen crowns will provide fresh asparagus for one person during the growing season. For freezing or canning, plant additional crowns.
