Discovered in 1935, it was named 'Peace' to mark the end of World War II
First cultivated in France by French rose breeder M. Meilland, its development was finished by the Conard Pyle Co. in the U.S. after Meilland sent a cutting to the U.S. on the last plane out of Paris before France fell to Germany. In 1945, it was given the name 'Peace' on the same day that Berlin fell to the Allies. When the United Nations was formed later that year, each member was given a 'Peace' Rose with a note that read, "We hope the 'Peace' rose will influence men?s thoughts for everlasting world peace".
Perfect in gardens in zones 4 to 9, the rose should be pruned in the spring to remove old canes and crossing canes. It needs moist, well-drained soil and full-sun.
