Multi-stemmed and easy to grow, this is a fine addition to any sunny garden.

Blooms in late spring, avoiding those late frosts that nip other blooms in the bud.
What a superb tribute to the man who founded the International Lilac Society, wrote a seminal book on Lilacs, and introduced 85 new cultivars! Father John Fiala was a parish priest and taught at John Carroll University in Cleveland, devoting his spare time to breeding cold-tolerant Lilacs and Flowering Crabapples. He will be sorely missed, but 'Fiala Remembrance' is a lovely way to honor his memory!

This double-flowered Lilac is magnificent. Very heavy-blooming, the large-petaled flowers burst into snowy bloom from creamy buds. In most climates they won't bloom until mid-May, making them impervious to the late frosts that nip so many other Lilacs in the bud.

As beautiful as the color and petal count of these bloom trusses is the fragrance, which is simply knock-you-flat powerful. So sweet, so pervasive, it will perfume the house from a few cut branches. Plant a line of 'Fiala Remembrance' along the sunny driveway or garden path and simply overwhelm visitors with the powerful scent! They flowers last well, too, whether cut or left on the shrub.

'Fiala Remembrance' is a multi-stemmed shrub 6 to 8 feet wide and up to 10 feet tall, a good size for a hedge, specimen, or border planting. It needs full sun to grow and bloom its best, but other than that is quite tolerant of stress, particularly dry or moist soils. Urban pollution is also no problem, making it a fine choice for a street tree, where its beauty and fragrance will become a neighborhood landmark. Butterflies adore this shrub and deer tend to avoid it -- they will certainly munch it if little else is on hand, but it is not their meal of choice in the garden!

In addition to the blooms, 'Fiala Remembrance' offers heart-shaped blue-green foliage and smooth gray bark. It is deciduous, and if you want to prune it, do so directly after it stops blooming in early summer, so that it has time to establish new growth. A bit leggy at maturity, it does well with an underplanting of perennial groundcover. Zones 3-7. Cannot ship to AZ.
