An American classic, 'Nearly Wild' is a rose to treasure for its fuss-free, heavy-blooming, super-hardy habit. Wonderfully fragrant and simply blanketed in 2-inch blooms in summer, this low-growing floribunda combines the best of the wild and cultivated species in one delightful package. Introduced in 1941 from parentage that includes the great rambler 'Dr. W. Van Fleet,' 'Nearly Wild' is still being honored -- most recently scooping up the Michigan Growers' Choice Award in 1999! This 2- to 3-foot tall and 3- to 4-foot wide shrub makes a good groundcover to taller, leggier roses, perennials, and larger shrubs, and is also compact enough for a container, where it forms a bushy, rounded, slightly tumbling presence that charms on the patio or atop a low wall. Its one requirement is good air circulation: this is not a shrub to cram into a poorly-ventilated side yard! Open, sunny spaces are its forte, and it will bloom magnificently for many years if given decent drainage.
